Yixing teapots (pronounced ee-shing) have been around since
the Sung Dynasty (960-1279) and are considered the ideal vessel for brewing
tea. The Yixing region of China, located 120 miles northwest of Shanghai, is
the only area in the world that has the renowned purple or red clay from which
Yixing teapots are made. Yixing teapots are handmade by a single potter with
the bottom of each pot carrying the creator’s “chop” mark
or identification mark. Historically, these teapots were small so each person
could have their own individual teapot.
Because of the porous nature of the
clay, the teapot becomes “seasoned”,
thus, making it paramount that you dedicate your favorite tea for your Yixing
pot. It is also important that you never use soap or scour your pot, rinse with
water and air dry. After using the teapot for many years, just by pouring hot
water into the pot, you should be able to pick up the flavor profile of your
tea. Not only do the Yixing teapots enhance the flavor of your tea, but they
also have the remarkable ability to retain heat and with prolonged use develop
a rich, beautiful luster.
All of our Yixing teapots are FDA approved and certified
lead free.
Yixing teapots are utilitarian, as well as highly collectible works
of art. Every tea lover should have at least one for his or her favorite tea.
